絆の物語－斎藤隆・故郷に捧げるマウンド [いい話]
いやぁ、いいドキュメンタリーだった。
NHK－BS1の『日本人メジャーリーガーの群像－斎藤隆・故郷に捧げるマウンド』のことです。
2011年、斎藤隆は大リーグ6年目を新天地ミルウォーキー・ブルワーズで迎えることになった。
斎藤と言えば横浜ベイスターズのエースとして活躍していたが、2003年以降は故障続きで精彩を欠いた。そんな状態から2006年大リーグに挑戦し、1球入魂の投球スタイルでセットアッパーやクローザーとして活躍する。大復活を果たしたと言えよう。41歳の今も現役バリバリ、中年たちの希望の星だ。
彼は仙台市出身で父親の地元は東松島市である。
3月11日の東日本大震災、海の向こうから被災した故郷を心配する息子に、両親は「大丈夫だぁ」
お前はそこに留まって野球にしっかり取り組んでくれという気持ちからの言葉であった。
斎藤投手はこの時ほど大丈夫が大丈夫でない大丈夫はなかったと語っていた。
そんな中でメジャーリーグが開幕。4月4日のブレーブス戦では1イニング2本の本塁打を浴びる。この日、斎藤投手は左太ももを痛めてしまった。さらに4月下旬には左わき腹を痛めて故障者リスト入り。かつてない故障の連続に気持ちは萎え、引退が脳裏をかすめる。
そんなとき、斎藤投手は自分のブログへ寄せられたファンや地元の被災者たちからのコメントに励まされる。コメントの中には23年前、高校野球の宮城県大会の準決勝で対戦した気仙沼高校野球部の芳賀秀行さんからのものがあった。
芳賀さんは現在、気仙沼でガソリンスタンドを経営するかたわら、気仙沼市立津谷中学校で野球部を指導している。子どもたちは親を失った者も多く、時折暗い表情を見せている。そんな子どもたちを斎藤投手の活躍で励ましてほしいという想いもあり、芳賀さんは斎藤投手のブログへコメントしたのだ。
「今回の震災で気仙沼は甚大な被害を受けました。漁業・観光の街なので、主要な工場や宿はすべて沿岸沿いにあり、復旧まではかなりの時間がかかりそうです。とはいえ、下を向いてばかりでは未来はないので、ガンガン前を向いて地域一丸で頑張っていきます！復興した際は必ず（絶対）気仙沼に来て下さい。『俺が接待すっから～！』（笑） これからも野球を通じて、みんなに元気・勇気・根気・・・・等いろんな‘気’を与えて下さいね！なんたって気仙沼の‘気’だから！！！」

故郷のために力になりたい・・・故郷の人たちやファンに励まされた斎藤投手は7月2日、ツインズとの対戦に途中登板すると好投。味方打線が反撃して、今季初勝利を復帰戦で飾る。
そしてこのあとからが凄かった。開幕当初とは別人のように心身のコンディションを高めた斎藤投手は好リリーフを続け、ブルワーズは29年ぶりとなる地区優勝を果たす。地区シリーズのダイヤモンドバックス戦ではブルワーズの先発が同点に追いつかれた後に登板し、ランナーを出しながらも後続を断った。その後の試合でも好リリーフを続け、チームは地区シリーズを突破する。
リーグ優勝決定戦初戦ではメジャーリーグきっての大打者、カーディナルスのA.プーホールズと対戦、真っ向勝負のピッチングでピンチをきりぬけた。(→ユーチューブ参照）その後も6試合に登板して無失点と好投を続けた。しかしチームはリーグ優勝決定戦で敗退し、斎藤投手の2011年シーズンは終わった。試合が終わったとき、斎藤投手はベンチで涙を流した。
ブルワーズが快進撃を続けるうちに、斎藤投手の中で「ワールドシリーズで優勝して、故郷を励まし、元気づけたい」という想いが強く沸き起こってきた。優勝して故郷に凱旋するイメージが勝手に作られたのだと言う。斎藤投手は大きな使命を感じとったのだろう。迷いなく、ただただ懸命に、気持ちを込めて投げたのだ。そんな2011年のシーズンが終わった。

斎藤投手と芳賀さんの通じ合いとふるさとに対する思いにとても感動させられました。
私は芳賀さんと同じ中学校で野球部の後輩です。
番組を観た時は正直、涙が流れました。
私も被災した故郷がある現実を目の前にして、ただ平凡な日々を過ごしいるのではなく、復興すべく力になりたいと思う気持ちがあります。
今のままふるさとを見捨てるような人間にだけはなりたくないです。

斎藤投手のあの熱いピッチングは、ふるさとを思う強い気持ちからきていたんですね。震災を機に沸き起こった、ひとを支えたいという気持ち、ふるさとを思う気持ちを、私も忘れないでいたいです。
